STTC Best Practices: Fleet Surveys

We know by experience that fleets have shortcomings in maintaining their tire programs: air pressures, mismatches and irregular wear. The most successful way to document the shortcomings is to conduct a thorough fleet survey of 10%-15% of the fleet. A 15% random sample is 90% statistically accurate that the rest of the fleet is in a similar state of readiness. A professional fleet survey presentation is an excellent way to build credibility with the fleet and to position to sell STTC fleet services. STTC utilizes the TMT form for conducting surveys.

FLEET PURPOSE

  • "If I was able to collect information from your fleet and provide you with an analysis of how to increase tire mileage, reduce tire costs, and increase casing integrity, would that be a value to you?"
  • "If I can help you gather information that would identify solutions for your fleet and save you money in the process, would you consider doing business with us?"
  1. What is your average annual mileage per vehicle?
  2. Do you have a wheel inspection and refurbishing process in place?
  3. What are the most important maintenance problems you are experiencing with your tire program?
  4. How many road calls do you experience in a week or a months' time period?
  5. How often do you feel the pressures and tire conditions are checked in your fleet?
  6. Have you lost customers or been penalized by your customers for lost or late deliveries due to tire failures or problems?
  7. Do your drivers do a good job at pre and post-trip inspections?
  8. Have you analyzed your tire failures to determine what is driving tires out of your fleet?
  9. How many flats do you experience a week or in a months' time period?
  10. Tell me about the percentage of retreads to new tires you are running in the fleet.
    1. Critical Information - such as:
      • Actual air pressure
      • Physical condition of the tires and wheels
      • Remaining 32nds
      • Wear patterns
      • Tire mating or matching
      • Tire tread designs by wheel position
      • Casing brands on retreads
    2. Tire Maintenance Practices (ask what their current tire maintenance practices consist of)
      • Pull points by wheel position
      • PSI specification = the weight of the load
      • Tire rotations performed
      • Alignment procedures
      • PM interval for tire checks
