Environment

STTC has resolved to take a wide range of measures to help reduce the negative impact that the current means of transportation has on the environment. STTC must promote what is clearly inseparable: our need for transportation and respect for the environment.

STTC's investment in Solar Panels, Tire Retreading, Rubber Recycling and Foam-Fill Recycling reduces America's oil consumption by millions of gallons per year.

Solar - Energy Consumption Reduction

To reduce our energy dependence, STTC installed a 160KW Solar Array to help power our Millville, NJ Retread Plant. As shown below, there are 1,000 solar panels mounted on the roof. This investment in our environment reduces Green House gases by 500,000 lbs/year and provides the equivalent energy used by 30 homes per year.

Retreads - 3,000,000 Gallons of Oil Saved Per Year!

Tire Casing
  • Tires are basically made of two parts: the Casing and the Tread. The Casing represents 80% of the original materials while the Tread represents the remaining 20%. When the Tread is worn-off the remaining Casing still has 80% of the original materials.
  • It requires approximately 22 gallons of oil to produce a truck tire while a retread only requires 7 gallons. STTC manufactures approximately 200,000 retreads per year thereby reducing America’s oil consumption by 3,000,000 gallons annually.
  • In addition, the need to dispose of 200,000 worn-out tires (casings) in landfills is drastically reduced by retreading each casing as many times as possible.
  •

Rubber Recyling - Reduction of over 100,000 Gallons of Petroleum Products

  • A step in the retreading process is called “buffing”.  Buffing is the process used to remove the remaining tread material from a worn-out tire (casing).  STTC’s three retread plants recycle approximately 2,500,000 lbs of this petroleum product each year.  This recycled product is used to make truck bed liners, railroad crossing material, playground and landscaping liner materials, hoses and many other rubber products.

    Foam Fill Recycling

  • Foam-fill is a material used to ‘flat-proof’ a tire.  It is most commonly used in industrial applications.  A liquid polyurethane material (foam-fill) is injected into a mounted tire through the valve stem until the tire reaches its proper air-pressure.  The liquid poly material cures into a synthetic rubber core that totally protects the tire from flats.
  • When the tire’s tread wears-off, the worn-out tire and rubber-core are removed from the wheel.  STTC recycles the rubber-cores of thousands of foam-fill tires per year.  Below is a picture of the “Auto-Fill Recycler” that STTC uses to mix recycled foam with new liquid polyurethane (foam-fill).  STTC recycles hundreds of thousands of pounds of this material per year.  Each pound of recycled material replaces one pound of new polyurethane material thereby significantly reducing America’s oil usage.
